As of 2011 there have been over 175 clinical trials related to mesothelioma, which is a small number considering the number of of cases is expected to peak worldwide in 2020.
Mesothelioma develops in three major histologic types including epithelial, sarcomatoid and biphasic. What makes mesothelioma such a peculiar diseases is that symptoms may not arise until 25 and sometimes 50 years following the initial exposure. According to the National Institute of Health between 14 and 30 people out of every million will be affected by mesothelioma each year in the United States.
With an estimated 11 million people being exposed to asbestos between 1940 and 1978, more than 2,000 new mesothelioma cases are diagnosed each year. The disease itself is diagnosed in stages, which range from one to four. The higher the stage number, the more advanced the case. The chart below depicts the four stages of diagnosis along with the expected life span.
