Cell Phones Account for 18% of Fatalities in all Distraction Related Accidents

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, of those killed in an accident involving a distract driver, 995 involved reports of cell phone usage, or 18% of all fatalities.

In 2009, distracted driving is believed to have lead to the deaths of nearly 5,500 hundred people and to the injuries of some 448,000 people. According to research by the University of Utah, using a cell phone while driving delays a driver's reactions as much as having a BAC at the legal limit of .08 percent. And drivers who use cell phones or hand-held devices are four times as likely to get into an accident serious enough to injure themselves.
