Every Minute, One Person is Injured from an Alcohol Related Accident in the United States

Of all fatal motor vehicle accidents in 2009, 32% involved alchool-impaired drivers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration nearly 11,000 people will die in drunk-driving accidents this year, which is roughly one every 49 minutes. It is also estimated that one in three Americans will be involved in an alcohol related accident at some point in their lives.

Federal law prohibits the use of operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content (BAC) above .08 or higher. Of the 10,839 people who died in an alcohol related accident in 2009, nearly 67% had drivers with a blood alcohol content above the legal limit.

The State of Pennsylvania
In 2009, there were 449 alcohol related motor vehicle accident deaths throughout the state of Pennsylvania. Of all fatal accidents for drivers between the ages of sixteen and twenty, 27% involved alcohol. An even higher amount, 44%, of all fatal accidents for drivers between the ages of 21 and 25 involved alcohol. It is estimated that 75% of drunk drivers in Pennsylvania are male and nearly 75% of all accidents occurred at night. The future of Pennsylvania drunk driving accidents does not look too promising as there were nearly 1,300 underage drinking drivers involved in an accident in 2009, one in three 8th graders drinks alcohol, and teen alcohol use kills roughly 6,000 people each year, which is more than all illegal drugs combines.
