According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration there were 4,595 fatal accidents involving motorcyclists in 2009 throughout the United States. In Pennsylvania alone, there were 3,736 motorcycle accidents reported, 195 of which were fatal, leading to 204 deaths and 3,677 injuries. Reports from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System find that the most common reasons of motorcyclist fatalities in single vehicle accidents are:

• lack of helmet usage (less than 50% of fatal motorcyclists are wearing a helmet)
• rural roads resulting in unsafe roadways
• high blood alcohol content
• undivided roadways
• speeding
• driving at night
• negotiating a curb

In 2008, Pennsylvania accounted for over 800,000 licensed motorcycle riders of which nearly 29,000 were trained in Pennsylvania's Motorcycle Safety Program that same year. Also in 2008, 237 motorcyclists were killed and another 4,000 more were injured. Less than half (49%) of all motorcyclists killed were not wearing a helmet and 32% had a blood alcohol content above .08, the legal limit.
