Pedestrian Accidents Fatalities Account for 11% of all Motor Vehicle Fatalities
According to the National Highway Traffic Association and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, pedestrians account for the second largest category of motor vehicle accidents fatalities following occupant deaths. Statistics show that there are 5,000 pedestrians killed and another 64,000 pedestrians injured in motor vehicle accidents in the United States each year. This means a pedestrian is injured in a traffic accident every 8 minutes and killed approximately every two hours.
While the number of pedestrian fatalities dropped from over 5,200 in 1998 to below 4,100 in 2009 it is still devastating to think that over 180,000 pedestrians have been killed in motor vehicle accidents between 1975 and 2005. Studies show that a pedestrian has an 85 percent chance of death when involved in a motor/vehicle collision at 40 mph, a 45 percent chance of death at 30 mph, and a 5 percent chance of death at 20 mph. Related pedestrian accident injuries include:
• fractures
• spinal cord injuries
• brain injuries
• paraplegia
• quadriplegia
There are a number of common factors that contribute to pedestrian accidents but negligence is the most common. Negligence includes failure to observe posted speed limits, yield to the right of way, disregarding traffic devices, etc. Over the past two decades, we've built a reputation of integrity, skill and professionalism with clients, other lawyers, judges and the community- specializing in personal injury cases resulting from automobile accidents, medical malpractice, premise liability and products liability, plus insurance bad faith, worker's compensation and social security claims.
