According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics there were 271 worker fatalities between 2000 and 2006 that died in a trench collapse accident or excavation cave-ins. There were 488 deaths between 1992 and 2000 or roughly 54 deaths per year, which is nearly fifteen deaths per year higher than the 39 deaths per year that the United Stated averaged between 2000 and 2006.
Of the 488 deaths between 1992 and 2000, 94% involved workers in privately owned companies while 6% were government workers, 46% of the companies had fewer than 11 employees while 68% had fewer than 50 employees. Construction laborers accounted for roughly 44% of all fatalities, plumbers 8%, construction trade workers 6%, and excavation machine operators 6%. Cave-in accounted for 77% of all fatalities, falling objects 6%, and pedestrians 4%.
