Distracted Driver Reporting
New Jersey Distracted Driver Reporting
In New Jersey, and across the nation, distracted driving has exploded as a top cause of crashes. It’s no secret smartphones receive most of the blame for this. The New Jersey Distracted Driver Reporting hotline aims to help.
New Jersey Aggressive Driver Reporting
Aggressive driving is not only dangerous, it’s illegal. In 1995, New Jersey introduced an aggressive driver reporting hotline. This hotline receives more than 2,000 calls a month. Since then, the program expanded to include distracted drivers in 2017.
Reporting Distracted Drivers in New Jersey
If you witness a distracted or aggressive driver, call #77. Of course, if you are driving, do not try to call and drive at the same time. Record the make, model, and year of the vehicle. Also, note the license plate of the vehicle. Drivers should pull off the road where safe and call to report.
What Happens to the Distracted Driver?
If a vehicle is reported as having a distracted driver, police will attempt to find the driver. If the police do not locate the driver, a letter is sent. The letter will inform the vehicle owner they were reported. The warning does not disclose information about the caller.
Why is it Important to Call?
A caller could help keep others on the road safe. If a police officer in the area is able to catch the distracted driver, they will face a fine. More importantly, this is a reminder of their dangerous driving behavior. The caller could save someone’s life.
