The Correlation Between Risperdal and Gynecomastia
Many lawsuits are being filed against the manufacturers of Risperdal. Risperdal hit the US market in 1993. Doctors prescribe it to aid in the treatment of schizophrenia and other disorders. It treats Bipolar I disorder and can treat autism in children.
Gynecomastia Caused By Risperdal
As a side effect, Risperdal causes gynecomastia. But, the drug-maker hid this information. The manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals is being sued as a result. Johnson & Johnson is a direct subsidiary of the company and is also included in the lawsuits. There have been thousands of lawsuits to date.
Risperdal contains powerful chemicals and is an anti-psychotic drug. The drug, intended for adults, was not approved for adolescents. Yet, doctors wrote prescriptions for adolescents without proper testing. Janssen encouraged it.
The drug treats dementia, schizophrenia and bipolar disorders. Children suffering from autism were also treated with Risperdal.
But the drug was not properly tested. There are now over 13,000 reported cases of adverse effects. The drug was being used to treat “off-label” issues, such as dementia in the elderly. The most severe adverse effect is death.
Gynecomastia is the overdevelopment of breast tissues in males. Studies link Risperdal to high levels of prolactin. Prolactin is a hormone that increases breast milk production in women. The drug causes men’s breasts to become overgrown.
Gynecomastia occurs in young men and causes physical health issues. It also causes mental health and body image issues. Even after surgery to remove the abnormal growth, the tissues can regrow. The effects of gynecomastia can last a lifetime.
Side Effect Study
One study monitored 10 young people given low doses of Risperdal. Three males developed gynecomastia. Two females had similar side effects. Doctors concluded there are direct negative correlations between Risperdal and gynecomastia.
In 2012, Johnson & Johnson faced six separate Risperdal lawsuits. Subpoenas required the CEO to testify. The FDA Commissioner also had to take part. Additionally, one lawsuit claimed plaintiff’s breast size was as large as a “D” cup.
Another landmark lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson was in 2015. The company lost $2.5 million for not placing a warning on the package for gynecomastia. J&J was negligent in not informing the public of the potential issues.
Product liability refers to a manufacturer being held responsible for defective products. If injuries are foreseeable and preventable, the manufacturer is responsible.
Product liability claims against Risperdal are successful because they meet these criteria. Usually, dangerous drugs fall under this area of law.
Product liability claims must include one of the following:
- Strict limitability
- Breach of warranty
