IVC Filter Problems
A defective IVC filter leads to a $34 million jury verdict for one woman in Philadelphia. Her story is not unique. We take a look at why there are over 700 more cases like this pending trial. If you have a Rex Medical “Option IVC” filter, talk to an attorney.
What Is An IVC Filter?
IVC stands for Inferior Vena Cava. An IVC filter catches blood clots in the Inferior Vena Cava before they reach the lungs. This helps at-risk patients avoid an embolism. Additionally, Rex Medical designed this filter to be removable. But, many patients are having trouble with their implants.
How An IVC Filter Works
Surgeons implant the IVC Filter in the inferior vena cava, the largest vein in the body. The filter is umbrella-shaped. Normal blood cells pass through the filter. But, larger clots become trapped in the filter. This prevents clots from reaching the lungs.
Defective Product Design
The problem with Rex Medical’s IVC filter is a faulty design. While the filter is designed to be removed, this often proves difficult. Additionally, some patients have complications related to this device. This specific filter is known to move, break apart, damage internal tissue, and more. Yet, Rex Medical claims their product is safe. In fact, they blame surgeons for incorrect installation fo the devices.
Serious Health Complications
A faulty medical implant creates a serious risk for the patient. When it comes loose, it can perforate, cut, and puncture anything it touches. And, internal damage is often hard to assess. Such internal damage can lead to organ failure, permanent disability, or even death.
Risk Of Removal
Removing a faulty medical implant isn’t always easy either. Often, open-heart surgery is the only way to remove a defective filter. In some cases, patients don’t have the option to remove a defective filter. When a defective implant breaks apart, it is impossible to retrieve all the pieces.
With so many cases related to Rex Medical’s IVC filter, it’s hard to deny there is a problem. But, is the problem with the product or the installation? Rex blames surgeons. We think it is a mix of both the product and surgeons.
