In 2005 and 2006, The FDA rejected Uloric. Cardiovascular health was in question. But, the drug released to the public after several safety trials were conducted. Takeda hid evidence of serious health problems. This is the basis for a Uloric lawsuit.
Takeda Pharmaceuticals purchased Uloric in 2009. The FDA approved and released the drug in the same year. Uloric, or febuxostat, treats gout. Gout is a disease that causes chalkstone deposits and painful arthritis in the feet.
Uloric Lawsuits On The Rise
In February 2019, the FDA released a warning to the public about Uloric. The safety warning stated Uloric causes a higher risk of cardiovascular events. It can even cause death.
Uloric Side Effects
The unfortunate side effects and deaths from Uloric have prompted many lawsuits. Some of the side effects of Uloric that cause pain and suffering are as follows:
- blood clots
- heart attack
- liver enzyme abnormalities
Patients and family members have sued Takeda and continue to bring forth more cases.
Takeda Takes The Fault
Uloric lawsuits allege Takeda hid the truth from the public. After developing the CARE safety testing program, Takeda promised to warn the public of all potential risks.
Takeda hid serious drug interactions and adverse reactions. Many kidney problems worsened in patients who took Uloric. Cardiovascular deaths have also occurred from failure to release crucial interactions. Insiders shared Takeda was fully aware of the situation and chose to keep the truth hidden.
Petition To Ban Uloric
In 2018, a petition to ban the drug rose to the surface. The Public Citizen group petitioned the FDA to remove Uloric from the shelves.
The group representative stated, “There is overwhelming evidence that the serious cardiovascular harms of febuxostat outweigh any purported clinical benefit.”
The FDA did not agree to the petition stating the drug is useful to some patients. However, the FDA did reject the drug twice in the past. This has victims of Uloric cases outraged.
