The Zimmer Kinectiv hip implant was innovative. It uses interchangeable modular components to customize each hip replacement. Before Zimmer’s product, hip replacements were a one-size-fits-all solution.
Metal Hip Implants
Like Depuy, the Zimmer hip implant was not safe. Metal-on-metal hip designs have serious flaws. The metal used in this taper hip prosthesis causes high levels of cobalt in the blood. The FDA issued a Class One recall.
Zimmer Hip Implant Recall
Cytotoxicity concerns forced the FDA to recall the M/L taper hip implant. The metal-on-metal design causes friction. Friction rubs off tiny pieces of metal that enter the body and bloodstream. These tiny pieces of metal cause metal toxicity.
Symptoms Of Metal Toxicity
Hip implant patients need a doctor immediately if they have any of these symptoms:
- Infection
- Avascular necrosis (osteonecrosis)
- Sudden weight gain or loss and the development of goiters (thyroid gland damage)
- Kidney Disease or renal failure
- Respiratory problems – breathlessness or difficulty breathing
- Heart problems – heart tremors, cardiomyopathy, or heart failure
- Cognitive disorders – memory problems, seizures, or trouble concentrating
- Severe pain around the implant area
Left untreated, metal toxicity can lead to death. You should take any complications seriously. If you have any of the above symptoms, see your doctor or visit the ER right away.
